Francesco did some profiling of the gate class and found cases in object creation where objects were created and later destroyed when they should have been simply moved. At least some of these tests go through the Python interface. He proposed that creating shared objects could alleviate this. Further testing is needed to understand the problem in more detail. I'm skeptical of defaulting to shared objects.
