File drag drop does not work

When I try to drag a file into excalidraw (either from OS file explorer or editor sidebar) it shows a message (Hold shift to drop into editor) but irrespective of whether or not I use shift the dropped file opens in a new editor rather than being added to the diagram open in excalidraw.

I am using ubuntu 23.10 mantic, but given that drag and drop works for me as expected in excalidraw web ui, I assume this is not linux specific.
